Met Gala brings in a record $17.4 million, the museum says

Met Gala

Met Gala, the biggest fundraising night of the fashion industry has broken a record this year. This year’s Met Gala earned a record $17.4 million, museum officials said Tuesday. The gala is traditionally held on the first Monday in May, but because of the pandemic, the 2021 version was held last September. The two galas together brought in $33.7 million, the institute said.

The annual self-funded Gala acts like a fundraiser. The amount collected this year will help to keep the institute running. It will also come in use for organizing fashion exhibitions like, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. The exhibit has made its debut this year and will be open to the public from May 7. This is part of a larger two-part exhibition about the history of American fashion.

Monday’s event hosted around 400 people from the fields of music, cinema, fashion, sports, and more. Olympic champion and snowboarder Chloe Kim wore a feathered tulle ball gown at her debut Met Gala. Kim Kardashian wore the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress which is also the world’s most expensive dress to be sold at the auction. Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton returned to the Gala after 20 years. New York City Mayor Eric Adams also graced with his presence amongst the invited others. Oscar-winner Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the author of the Broadway blockbuster “Hamilton,” also co-hosted the Met Gala on Monday.

The event originally took place in 1948, and for a long time, it was only open to New York’s upper crust. In 1995, Wintour took over as the party’s host and turned it into a runway for the rich and famous. The dinner raised $16.4 million for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last year.
