The Chinese city of Xian, in northwest China, is facing a foot shortage issue as it enters the eighth day of lockdown. The city is having difficulty managing food supplies for its residents. Here’s the full scoop. 

Xian lockdown leads to food shortage

On Wednesday Zhan Fenghu, a government official of Xian stated that “Xian has reached a live-or-die stage in its fight against the virus”. While the city has lower cases than other clusters overseas, officials are bringing stricter measures in place. Additionally, travel inside and out of the city has been prohibited since December 23. Beijing is demanding that each outbreak be strictly monitored and contained. Residents are stopped from leaving their homes unless they are going for COVID-19 testing or attending important matters.

However, citizens of Xian have limited access to essential requirements and several are relying on delivery services. According to the city’s government official, the lockdowns are leading to a food shortage. This is also furled by the staffing shortages at organizations that are responsible for basic needs. The official assures that the Chinese government, the net is working towards solving the problem.

Current condition and new updates of the virus

According to the latest data from the National Health Commission, China noted 156 new locally transmitted cases on Wednesday. Previously on Wednesday, the city had 151 such cases. However, out of the, 151 were in Xian and one from Guangxi in the southern region. Since December 9, the city has reported about 1,117 new cases. 

The city is home to around 13 million people. China is also conducting mass testing for its residents. Additionally, all public activities in the city are brought to a halt. The city is famous for its mesmerizing Terracotta warriors. Beijing is aiming at a ‘zero-covid’ approach to quickly identify the cases.
