Hamas Leadership Change in Gaza
Hamas has announced Yahya Sinwar as the new head of its political bureau following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. Sinwar, the top official in Gaza, has been in hiding, evading Israeli attempts on his life, and is notorious for orchestrating severe attacks on Israel.
Background and appointment
Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31. Sinwar’s appointment was confirmed by a brief Hamas statement:”The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may Allah have mercy on him.”
The announcement was followed by a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza by militants still engaged in conflict with Israeli forces. Sinwar, known for his harsh enforcement and strong opposition to Israel, was elected as Hamas’ Gaza leader in 2017. He previously led the Al-Majd security apparatus, targeting Palestinians accused of collaborating with Israeli intelligence.
Sinwar’s rise comes amid heightened tensions, with Iran vowing severe retaliation for recent events. This follows a series of high-profile assassinations, including Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in Beirut and military commander Mohammed Deif. Sinwar’s leadership is expected to intensify the ongoing conflict in the region.
