Discovery of the world’s third-largest diamond
Debswana, a diamond firm is previously have found the world’s third-largest diamond. The stone weighs 1,098 carats and unearthed in Botswana. Moreover, it is merely 11 carats smaller than the second-largest diamond, Lesedi La Rona. It measures 1,109 carats and unearthed in Botswana by Lucara Diamonds, in the year 2015.
“This is the largest discovered by Debswana in its history of over 50 years in operation. From our preliminary analysis it could be the world’s third-largest gem-quality stone,” said Lynette Armstrong, the acting managing director of Debswana Diamond
A deeper look into the diamond
The diamond was shown to Lefoko Moagi, the Mineral Minister of Botswana. He said that it and discovered it at a better time. It is because diamond sales have taken a hit since the beginning of the pandemic. He reported that the stone measures 73mm in length, 52mm in width, and 27mm in thickness. However, the stone is not harmed.
The stone is “rare and extraordinary”. As of now, the firm has not decided if they will sell it or keep it. Additionally, the company is planning to increase its output by 38 percent to the pre-pandemic measures. 23 million carats of the diamond will help as the diamond markets recover from the pandemic’s hit. With travel restrictions easing up, there is more hope.
