Spain Dominates 2024’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants List
Spain has reaffirmed its status as the epicenter of fine dining, with six of its eateries making the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2024, including three in the top five. The awards, regarded as the Oscars of global fine dining, were presented at the Wynn in Las Vegas.
Top honors for Barcelona’s Disfrutar
Barcelona’s Disfrutar claimed the top prize, moving up from second place last year. Owned by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casanas, Disfrutar is celebrated for its imaginative and technically masterful dishes, like the caviar-filled Panchino doughnut and frozen gazpacho sandwich. The trio met while working at the legendary El Bulli.
Spain’s strong showing
Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, renowned for its exceptional barbecue under chef Victor Arguinzoniz, took second place. Diverxo in Madrid secured fourth place. These rankings underscore Spain’s culinary influence and innovation.
Paris and Lima make their mark
Paris’s Table by Bruno Verjus ranked third, while Lima’s Maido, known for its unique fusion cuisine, came in fifth. Lima’s representation highlights its rising status as South America’s premier dining destination.
Notable entries from around the globe
The list featured diverse entries from around the world. Mexico City’s Quintonil, which ranked seventh, led North America’s contenders. New York City’s Atomix and California’s SingleThread also made the list, with Atomix rising to sixth place.
Asian and other international highlights
Asia was well-represented with Tokyo’s Sézanne ranking 15th, and Bangkok’s Gaggan Anand at ninth. Hong Kong’s Wing was the highest new entry at 20th, and The Chairman was the highest climber, moving from 50th to 26th.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, comprising 1,080 international restaurant industry experts, compiles the list. Restaurants can only win the top prize once, after which they join the “Best of the Best” program. This elite group includes former winners like Geranium, Noma, and Eleven Madison Park.
