In a deeply shocking incident that has drawn swift global condemnation, a deadly terror attack on Tuesday in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of several civilians and left at least 20 others injured.
The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the proscribed Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the assault.
A wave of global support for India
World leaders from across continents have expressed solidarity with India, denouncing the brutal attack and offering heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.
U.S. President Donald Trump reacted swiftly on Truth Social, stating, “We pray for the souls of those lost, and for the recovery of the injured. Prime Minister Modi and the incredible people of India have our full support and deepest sympathies. Our hearts are with you all!”
At a White House briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump would soon speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “These types of horrific events by terrorists are why those of us who work for peace and stability in the world continue our mission,” she stated.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who is currently in India on a diplomatic visit, also conveyed his condolences in person.
Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the attack unequivocally, offering his “sincere condolences” and calling it a “brutal crime with no justification whatsoever.”
In a statement released by the Kremlin, Putin noted, “Kindly accept the sincere condolences over the tragic consequences of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, whose victims were civilians — citizens of various countries. We expect that its organizers and perpetrators will face deserved punishment.”
He reiterated Russia’s commitment to deepening its counterterrorism cooperation with India and extended sympathy to the families of the deceased and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured.
Ukraine and Iran among others denounce the violence
Ukraine’s government also issued a statement expressing deep concern, referencing its own ongoing struggle with terrorism. “We endure the loss of life from terrorism daily and firmly condemn terrorism in all its forms. When innocent people are murdered, it brings unbearable pain. The perpetrators should be held accountable,” the statement read.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack, calling it an “inhuman act against civilians.”
Europe and the Middle East respond with solidarity
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posted her condolences on X (formerly Twitter), calling for united global action against terrorism. Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar called the incident “sad,” adding that Israel stands firmly with India in its fight against terror. Argentina’s Ambassador Mariano Caucino also extended condolences on behalf of his country.
A call for justice and a reaffirmation of resolve
As investigations continue, global leaders have not only expressed outrage but also renewed their commitment to combating terrorism. The coordinated response underscores the growing international consensus that such acts of terror, particularly those targeting civilians, must be met with a united front.
India, meanwhile, has intensified security in the region, and top officials, including Prime Minister Modi, are actively monitoring the situation. The victims, many of whom were tourists, are being remembered both in India and abroad as innocent lives lost to an act of senseless violence.
