In a shocking incident, a 44-year-old zookeeper from a private zoo in Parkent, Uzbekistan, lost his life in a lion attack while attempting to impress his girlfriend. The zookeeper, identified as F. Iriskulov, unintentionally filmed the harrowing moment of his death as he entered the lions’ enclosure to record a video.
A stunt gone tragically wrong
Iriskulov, who was on the night shift, approached the lion’s den at 5 a.m. to record footage of himself interacting with the animals. The video, now circulating on social media, shows him unlocking the enclosure and walking towards the lions, who initially appeared calm.
The footage captures Iriskulov calling one of the lions by name, “Simba,” and stroking its mane in an apparent attempt to show his confidence and bond with the big cats. However, the situation took a fatal turn when one of the lions suddenly attacked him.
Despite his desperate cries of “Be quiet, be quiet,” the lion fatally mauled Iriskulov. His camera inadvertently documented his final moments.
Police and official response
Local authorities confirmed the incident, issuing a statement: “Today, December 17, three lions kept in a single cage at the Lion Park private zoo, located in Parkent district of Tashkent Region, escaped into the zoo’s courtyard,” the department said.
The lions entered the courtyard, attacking and injuring a 44-year-old keeper born in 1980. Unfortunately, the keeper later died from his injuries,” it added.
A tragic reminder of risks in wildlife care
The incident has raised questions about safety protocols at private zoos and the risks faced by zookeepers. While Iriskulov’s actions appear to have been driven by personal motives, experts emphasize that wild animals, regardless of familiarity, remain unpredictable and dangerous.
The private zoo has yet to comment on the tragedy or announce any changes to its operational procedures following the incident.
This shocking event serves as a somber reminder of the need for caution and respect when working with or interacting with wild animals.
