A terrifying video shows a Texas boy scrambling for shelter as bullets from a drive-by shooting shatter the window of his apartment. Errol Hill, nine, is lucky to be alive because the gunshots missed him by inches.
At around 7:30 p.m., the kid is seen climbing onto the couch in his living room, accompanied by his dog. He recoiled in panic and ducked for shelter as dust and smoke poured through the front window. His shocked dog, too, appeared terrified. Hill took cover behind what seemed to be a washing machine.
“It came through the wall,” Hill told NBC 5. “I thought it was just fireworks, but when I heard the screams, I looked outside.”
The incident occurred on May 1 and injured six individuals, including four children. The event happened at the Miramar housing complex in Fort Worth. According to local accounts, the victims varied in age from 3-19.
A barrage of bullets flew past Hill’s head. The kid waited for the shots to stop before running into the next room to see his mother, Mary Jane Gonzales, a medical assistant. She inspected Hill and two other children to ensure their safety. Gonzales then heard neighbours crying downstairs and hurried to aid. This is when she learned six people were shot.
Gonzales did her best to stop the bleeding on her neighbors. A three-year-old child had to have a kidney removed due to her injuries.
“That one was really hard for me,” Gonzales said. “Seeing her going in and out of consciousness.”
Gonzales revealed that the incident left a mark on her and her family, and they would like to move out of the apartment. They had lived here for the past four years.
“It forever changed our life. We are traumatized,” she said. “I’ve never seen anyone get shot, let alone a child.”
According to Fort Worth Police, one of the victims declined care at the scene despite suffering a minor injury. The others were transported to the hospital. Their current conditions are unclear.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with this case. Police have asked the public to call 817-392-4222 with any tips.
