Swarm of flying bugs invades Volaris flight before takeoff

Passengers aboard a Volaris flight were visited by a swarm of flying bugs last week, marking the second time in nearly a year that the airline has faced a similar insect invasion. The bugs, which a passenger identified as mosquitoes, took over the cabin of a flight traveling from Morelia, Mexico, to Los Angeles, California, on September 8, as reported by Storyful.

Flight takes off despite mosquito swarm

Despite the “exorbitant amount of mosquitoes” inside the cabin, the flight took off as scheduled, according to passenger Jose Javier Suarez, who shared his experience with Storyful. Footage captured by Suarez shows the insects crowding the ceiling at the back of the plane while passengers were still boarding.

Passengers and crew remain calm

An airline staff member took photos of the bug swarm on her phone, but according to Suarez, everyone remained calm. He explained that the plane door was likely left open during refueling, allowing the bugs to enter. Suarez added that the rainy season often brings an increase in mosquitoes, which were likely attracted by the lights inside the cabin.

Suarez mentioned that the bugs “didn’t really bother him” after he wrapped himself in a jacket and fell asleep. However, the insects were still visible when the plane landed in Los Angeles. Storyful has not confirmed whether the bugs were mosquitoes.

Previous mosquito invasion on Volaris flight in 2023

This is not the first time Volaris has encountered an insect issue. In October 2023, a Volaris flight was delayed for several hours after a similar swarm of mosquitoes overran the cabin. A viral video captured that incident, although it was unclear how the mosquitoes entered the plane. Additionally, a local media report revealed another mosquito infestation aboard a Volaris flight in 2019.
