Watch: New Hampshire governor saves man choking on a lobster roll

A Dramatic Turn of Events at the Hampton Beach Lobster Roll Eating Competition

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu became an unexpected hero this weekend during the Hampton Beach Lobster Roll Eating Competition. The governor’s quick thinking and decisive action saved a contestant from a potentially fatal choking incident.

“I was the first to notice”

“In the commotion and excitement of the contest, I was the first to notice that the gentleman at the far end of the row of contestants was choking. So, I moved forward and immediately started giving him the Heimlich,” Sununu stated to The Hill.

Captured on camera: Heroic rescue

A video captured by a spectator provides a gripping visual of the incident. The contestant, identified as Christian Moreno, can be seen signaling for help as others around him continued their culinary challenge. Sununu, recognizing the urgency, sprang into action. He positioned himself behind Moreno and administered several forceful compressions until emergency responders could take over.

A community spirit

“Here in New Hampshire, we never hesitate to jump in to help. I’m just glad I paid attention in my high school health class,” Sununu remarked. His quick response epitomizes the community spirit and readiness to help that New Hampshire residents are known for.

In a surprising twist, Moreno, who had choked on his second lobster roll, returned to the competition after the crisis was averted. “After the lobster roll was dislodged, Christian went right back to the contest, which I couldn’t believe,” Sununu said. “He ate another seven lobster rolls after that!”

The incident, while alarming, ended on a high note with Moreno continuing his culinary feat, thanks to the timely intervention of Governor Sununu.
