Watch: Disney star becomes mid-flight hero by removing snake from plane

Unusual Discovery Sparks Panic

A routine Virgin Airlines flight from Broome to Perth turned into an unexpected adventure when a snake was found onboard just before takeoff. The incident, which occurred on November 21, saw Australian Disney actor Andre Rerekura step in to remove the reptile, earning him praise from both passengers and crew.

The discovery came to light when a passenger spotted the snake slithering through the cabin, prompting alarm among travelers. “They pretty much shut the whole plane down, and everyone was going to get disembarked and sent off the plane, which we weren’t that keen on because everyone wanted to go home,” Rerekura told ABC News.

Calm amid chaos

As panic set in, a woman seated near Rerekura screamed as the snake slithered past her before ending up next to his foot. Remaining composed, the actor identified the snake as a Stimson’s python, a non-venomous and harmless species native to northern Australia.

“As soon as I saw it, I identified it pretty easily… so I knew it was safe [and] I knew it was just scared and super shy,” he explained. Demonstrating calmness and expertise, he safely removed the python from the aircraft, ensuring the snake’s well-being while allowing the flight to proceed.

Passenger cheers and gratitude

Rerekura’s quick thinking prevented a significant delay and avoided the need for all passengers to disembark. The airline staff and fellow travelers were quick to show their appreciation. “The staff was awesome; they gave me a complimentary drink, and I had a soda water,” Rerekura said, recounting the lighthearted end to the incident.

Passengers cheered as the actor was hailed a hero. The delay lasted only 20 minutes before the plane departed and safely landed in Perth a few hours later.

Unanswered questions

The appearance of the snake remains a mystery. Craig Shaw, the chief executive of Broome International Airport, told ABC News that he was “uncertain how the reptile came to be on board” and referred inquiries to the airline.

Stimson’s pythons are a common sight in northern Australia during the warmer months, but their presence on an aircraft is highly unusual.

Rerekura’s unexpected role in resolving the situation highlights his courage and quick thinking, leaving passengers with a memorable story and, thankfully, an unscathed flight experience.
