Brutal Assault in Broad Daylight

A 58-year-old woman was viciously attacked by two individuals wielding a baseball bat on the Lower East Side on Tuesday afternoon, according to police reports. The assault occurred around 2 p.m. on Monroe Street near Franklin Avenue.

Yanon Shi sustained significant injuries, including bruises to her leg and swelling on her head. She was promptly taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital and is currently recovering at home. Shi, who speaks Chinese, communicated with NBC New York through her granddaughter, who translated for her.

“She needs someone to help her walk. She needs something to hold her up and her legs hurt,” her granddaughter explained, highlighting Shi’s pain and immobility.

Details of the attack

According to Shi, the two masked assailants approached her, with one punching her in the head and the other repeatedly striking her with a bat. She fell to the ground as the attack continued. Remarkably, the attackers did not steal anything and fled the scene immediately after the assault.

Shi, a Staten Island resident, was in the city to visit a daycare. She expressed confusion over the seemingly random attack, stating she had no idea why she was targeted.

The incident underscores the need for increased safety measures and awareness in urban areas to prevent such unprovoked assaults. Police are continuing their investigation into the attack.
