Pontiff seen lying in state at residence chapel following Easter Monday death
The Vatican on Tuesday released a solemn image and accompanying video showing Pope Francis lying in an open coffin as preparations begin for his funeral later this week. The photo shows the late pontiff dressed in a red liturgical robe, wearing the traditional papal mitre, and holding a rosary in his hands.
The images were captured in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican residence where Pope Francis lived and where he passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
The publication marks one of the first official glimpses of the late Pope following his death on Easter Monday, as the Catholic Church prepares to bid farewell to a historic and transformative spiritual leader.
