CBS News to Host the Debate as Early Voting Kicks Off
In a pivotal moment for the upcoming general election, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance have agreed to face off in a vice presidential debate on October 1. The event, hosted by CBS News, will take place in New York City as early voting begins in several states.
Debate date finalized after weeks of speculation
CBS News announced the debate details on its X feed on Wednesday, offering four possible dates: September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8. Governor Walz was quick to confirm his participation, reposting the announcement with the message, “See you on October 1, JD.” The Harris-Walz campaign echoed this sentiment, stating that Walz “looks forward to debating JD Vance — if he shows up.”
Senator Vance also confirmed his attendance on X, but not without a twist. He accepted the October 1 date while challenging Walz to an earlier debate on September 18. The Harris-Walz campaign has yet to respond to this additional challenge.
The Kamala Harris-Walz campaign did not return requests for comment regarding Vance’s challenge for a September 18 debate on CNN. Similarly, representatives for CNN have not confirmed whether Walz has accepted the earlier date or if other dates were proposed for a debate on their network.
The agreement comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding whether Walz and Vance would debate before the November 5 general election. The political landscape shifted dramatically when President Joe Biden exited the race, leading Democrats to select Vice President Kamala Harris to head their ticket.
Senator Vance has primarily targeted Harris in his campaign rhetoric, preparing to debate her before Biden’s departure. He has also launched pointed critiques at Governor Walz, questioning his service record as a retired Army National Guardsman.
Former President Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, has been instrumental in pushing for the Vance-Walz debate on CBS. Trump has also negotiated several other debate dates across three different networks. Notably, Fox News has proposed a debate between Harris and Trump for September 4, while NBC News aims to air one on September 25.
Harris open to additional debates
During a recent appearance in Michigan, Vice President Harris expressed her willingness to engage in more debates, stating she was “happy to have that conversation” about additional dates.
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes will be on the October 1 debate, which promises to be a significant moment in the 2024 election cycle.
