All about Ukraine’s emergency power shutdowns
Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine on Tuesday stated that the nation will be switching to emergency power shutdowns to stabilize power grids. They were recently impacted by Russian missile strikes. As per a Reuters report, the missiles were directed toward the cities of Odesa and Zaporizhzhia. In addition to claiming two lives, it damaged residential houses and critical infrastructure.
“The biggest number of shutdowns is in Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Khmelnytskyi, and Cherkasy regions”, referring to the regions spanning the length and breadth of the country,” Zelensky said before promising that the authorities “will do everything to restore stability,” stated Zelensky. Moldova, Ukraine’s neighbor was also affected by the recent missile strikes. Hence, Zelensky stress that this situation proves how Russia is “a threat not only to Ukraine but also to our entire region”.

In his nightly address to Ukraine, Zelensky revealed that Russia fired about 70 missiles toward Ukraine. Their defense system was successful in dealing with most of them. While the exact number was not verified, as per the Ukraine defense ministry, about 50 missiles were intercepted. Russia stated that it planned a “massive strike using high-precision weapons”. It added that they were successful in hitting all 17 intended targets and that civilian buildings were not included.
Following the event, the World Health Organisation (WHO) also expressed its concern regarding the lack of power. Combined with the emergency power shutdowns, this year’s winter can be “deadly” for millions across the country.
