UK teacher arrested after confiscating her daughters’ iPads: “A complete overreaction”

Vanessa Brown, 50, arrested over alleged iPad theft in shocking police response

A 50-year-old school teacher in Surrey, Vanessa Brown, claims she was arrested and detained for over seven hours after confiscating her daughters’ iPads—a decision she says was made to help them focus on schoolwork. The incident, which took place on March 26, has since sparked outrage and raised questions about the proportionality of the police response.

Speaking to LBC, Brown revealed she spent seven and a half hours in a cell at Staines police station after a man in his 40s reported the devices stolen. The iPads were eventually tracked to her mother’s house in Cobham, Surrey, prompting officers to arrest Brown on suspicion of theft.

“It was just a complete overreaction”

Recalling the incident, Brown said the experience left her shaken and sleepless. “I find it quite traumatic even talking about this now,” she told LBC. “At no point did they [the officers] think to themselves, ‘Oh, this is a little bit of an overreaction for a moment, confiscating temporarily her iPads and popping over to her mum’s to have a coffee’. It was just a complete overreaction. It was thoroughly unprofessional. They were speaking to my mother, who is in her 80s, like she was a criminal.”

Brown was fingerprinted and searched, and her custody photographs were taken. She also claimed that police officers visited her children’s school and removed one of her daughters from class to question her.

Bail conditions prevented her from contacting her children

Following her arrest, Brown was released on conditional bail with the stipulation that she could not contact her daughters—because they were considered part of the investigation.

“I couldn’t even speak to my own children,” Brown said. “I was being treated like a criminal for doing what any responsible parent might do.”

Police acknowledge the iPads belonged to her children

In a statement to LBC, a spokesperson for Surrey Police said they initially responded to a report of a possible theft.

“Officers attended a property where the occupant was questioned about the iPads and denied any knowledge of their whereabouts. However, a tracking device on the iPads showed that they were at the address, and a 50-year-old woman from Cobham was arrested on suspicion of theft.”

The spokesperson added that a lawful search was conducted, and the devices were found. “The woman was subsequently released on conditional bail while further inquiries were carried out. The police bail conditions included not speaking to her daughters, who were connected to the investigation.”

After further investigation, Surrey Police concluded that the iPads were indeed owned by Brown’s children and that she had the legal right to confiscate them. The force has not issued a formal apology, but Brown’s case has triggered fresh criticism of police procedures and their handling of domestic or family-related disputes.
