In a creative twist on customer service, a food truck on the Isle of Man is now offering “seagull insurance” with every meal, ensuring patrons can enjoy their food without fear of it being snatched by the island’s notorious seagulls. Hawkins BBQ, located on a small island nestled in the Irish Sea between Ireland and Britain, introduced the insurance for a modest fee of just one extra pound—or approximately $1.30.
Addressing a feathered menace
The introduction of seagull insurance was announced by the food truck on social media, where it quickly gained attention.
“I think it’s fair to say that many on the island have had one or two (traumatic) experiences with the islands’ enthusiastic seagulls,” the post read. “Whether it’s being swooped on walking down Strand Street or attacked eating ice cream/gelato, we might have something for you,” the business humorously noted.
For the small fee, customers are guaranteed a full replacement of their meal if a seagull swoops in and makes off with their barbecue sandwich or loaded fries. The proceeds from this novel insurance policy will be donated to the Manx Wildlife Trust, a local nature conservation charity.
Inspired by a Scottish idea
The concept of seagull insurance isn’t entirely new. Chef and co-owner of Hawkins BBQ, Matt Hawkins, explained that the idea was inspired by a similar initiative in Scotland. “We saw the idea across in Scotland, and introducing the ‘insurance’ to our customers on the Isle of Man was a no-brainer,” Hawkins told Fox News.
He elaborated on the growing issue, noting that in the UK, seagulls are a protected species, which has led to an overpopulation problem and increasingly aggressive behavior as the birds compete for food. “We wanted to give patrons peace of mind when enjoying our meals,” Hawkins added.
Positive public reception
The public’s response to the quirky insurance offering has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents and customers have praised the idea as both clever and charitable. “This is a cute idea and a lovely way to support the Wildlife Trust,” Isle of Man resident Helen Furner commented on Hawkins BBQ’s social media post.
Another local, Gail Anderson, echoed the sentiment, saying, “What a fantastic idea.” With the introduction of seagull insurance, Hawkins BBQ is not only protecting its customers’ meals but also contributing to a good cause, making it a win-win for everyone—except, perhaps, for the seagulls.
