Fugitive Father and Children Spotted in New Zealand Wilderness After Three-Year Search
Tom Phillips, a New Zealand father who vanished with his three children—Ember, 8, Maverick, 9, and Jayda, 11—into the wilderness in 2021, has been seen for the first time since disappearing. The sighting has sparked a new wave of hope and concern as authorities continue their pursuit of the fugitive.
The search that gripped a nation
Phillips had been the focus of a nationwide search since December 2021, when he took his children away from their family home after a dispute with their mother. The case drew widespread attention, with multiple reported sightings over the years, but this is the first time he has been seen with all three children.
The sighting occurred on October 3 in Marokopa, a bush area in New Zealand. A group of teenage pig hunters captured the encounter on video, later reporting it to authorities. The teenagers briefly spoke to one of the children, asking if anyone knew they were there, to which the child replied, “only you,” and continued walking.
Authorities verify sighting
New Zealand Police confirmed the sighting as “credible” and a piece of “positive information” for the children’s family. “We know it will be reassuring for the children’s wider family,” said Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders.
The sighting prompted a three-day search operation, involving police and army helicopters, in the rugged terrain where Phillips and his children were seen in camouflage clothing, with Phillips reportedly carrying a gun.
Mother’s plea for action
Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, the children’s mother, Cat, expressed her relief that her children were still alive and appeared to be in good health. However, she accused her ex-partner of using the children as “pawns in his game,” adding, “They shouldn’t have to be worrying about where they’re going to sleep that night or whether they’re going to be warm.”
She called for authorities to intensify their efforts to track down Phillips and urged those assisting him to come forward.
Allegations of criminal activity and public appeal
Phillips is also wanted in connection with a suspected bank robbery in Te Kuiti, a town in New Zealand’s North Island. Authorities have warned the public not to approach him, as he is considered armed and dangerous.
Despite offering an NZ$80,000 reward for information earlier this year, no credible leads have emerged about the family’s whereabouts. Police believe Phillips has been receiving help from unknown parties to evade capture.
“We believe that Tom and the children are being assisted and we’re urging anyone who’s doing this to please stop, do the right thing, and tell police what you know,” said Det Insp Andrew Saunders.
Children’s education and wellbeing in question
