Incident in Tracy Arm Fjord
In an incident that has captured social media’s imagination, the Carnival Spirit cruise ship grazed a piece of ice in Alaska’s Tracy Arm Fjord last week. One passenger dramatically likened the event to a modern “Titanic moment.”
Safety assessments and ship status
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed in a statement to The Post that the hull of the Carnival Spirit was assessed following the incident last Thursday, and no damages were found. The ship continued its seven-day journey without further issues and is expected to dock in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday.
Despite the lack of damage, passengers and social media users took to dramatizing the event. “If we die, it was damn well worth it,” passenger Cassandra Goskie declared in a TikTok video she shared. “It’s a Titanic moment,” she added, capturing the moment the Spirit struck the ice.
“Oh, we are hitting it,” Goskie said as the ship made contact with the ice, while other passengers crowded around the edge of the side deck to watch the spectacle unfold.
Another passenger shared images of the incident with a meteorologist, who reposted them on X (formerly Twitter). One of the images shows a tugboat trailing behind the Carnival Spirit, effortlessly navigating over the mostly submerged ice.
Previous Carnival cruise incident
This incident follows another Carnival cruise mishap on September 6, when the Carnival Vista had to reroute its Caribbean trip due to an engine problem. The change in plans left passengers frustrated, many of whom have since demanded refunds.
While the grazing of ice by the Carnival Spirit turned out to be a minor hiccup, the dramatic reactions from passengers have made it a notable event.
