Cooper, representing Michigan, won the title at the 73rd Miss USA pageant held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The event marked a significant milestone in Cooper’s life, highlighting her exceptional background and achievements.
A distinguished background
Cooper’s impressive resume includes graduating in the top 5% of her class from West Point Military Academy and being a Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in data science. Her dedication to excellence extends beyond academics and into her military career.
During the competition, Cooper excelled in the evening gown, swimsuit, and interview rounds. In the final question segment, she was asked how to bridge cultural gaps and foster understanding and respect. Cooper, the daughter of a migrant worker and a proud Afro-Latina, drew from her personal experiences, saying, “If there’s anything that my life and my mother have taught me, it’s that your circumstances never define your destiny.”
Controversies within the Miss USA organization
Cooper’s coronation comes after a year of controversies within the Miss USA organization. The pageant faced significant challenges, including the resignations of former titleholders Noelia Voigt and Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava, amid allegations of harassment under Miss USA CEO Laylah Rose’s leadership. Despite these difficulties, Cooper aims to use her platform to inspire and demonstrate that “success is accessible through demanding excellence.”
Looking forward
As the new Miss USA, Cooper is poised to make a significant impact. She expressed her desire to be a role model, stating, “I would have the opportunity to show that if you can see me, you can be me.” Her journey as Miss USA will undoubtedly focus on representation, empowerment, and bridging cultural gaps, showcasing the potential for success regardless of one’s background.
Cooper’s reign as Miss USA 2024 promises to be a transformative and inspiring journey, reflecting her dedication to excellence and her commitment to making a positive impact on society.
