Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has unleashed a series of accusations against UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, criticizing the Labour leader’s actions—or lack thereof—during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) from 2008 to 2013. Musk’s allegations center on child grooming gangs and systemic failures in addressing mass rape cases in the UK.
Accusations by Musk against Starmer
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, accused Starmer of not prosecuting grooming gangs during his time as the head of the Crown Prosecution Service. Musk alleged that Starmer allowed “Pakistani grooming gangs” and “rape gangs” to exploit vulnerable women, a claim that echoes the controversial Rotherham sex scandal.
The Rotherham case exposed systemic failures where authorities reportedly ignored child sexual exploitation crimes, often involving networks of Pakistani-origin men, due to concerns about being labeled racist. Musk has since used the scandal as a focal point in his critique, claiming the Labour government failed to act decisively.
A rift with Nigel Farage
Musk’s criticism of Starmer comes alongside his surprising shift in support away from Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party. Despite months of public backing and rumored discussions of a financial donation to the party, Musk recently called for Farage to be replaced.
In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Musk stated, “Farage doesn’t have what it takes” to lead the Reform Party, signaling a stark departure from his earlier endorsements.
Other targets of criticism by Musk
In addition to Starmer, Musk has directed accusations at safeguarding minister Jess Phillips, accusing her of covering up for Starmer. He alleged that Phillips rejected calls for a public inquiry into the grooming gang scandals and went as far as labeling her a “rape genocide apologist.”
The Labour government has been quick to push back against Musk’s remarks. Health Secretary Wes Streeting dismissed the billionaire’s comments as “misjudged and misinformed.” Starmer’s defenders argue that during his tenure as DPP, he implemented new guidelines in 2013 to strengthen the prosecution of child sexual exploitation cases.
Grooming gang scandals in focus
The grooming gang scandals in towns such as Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford revealed widespread child sexual exploitation, often involving men of predominantly Pakistani descent. Investigations showed that officials sometimes ignored or downplayed abuse, fearing accusations of racism.
The issue remains a sensitive and polarizing topic in British politics, with calls for greater transparency and accountability in addressing such crimes. Musk’s comments have sparked intense debate, bringing renewed attention to past failures and the political dynamics surrounding these controversies. As the discourse unfolds, both Starmer’s track record and Musk’s motivations remain under scrutiny.
