Authorities investigate bizarre theft involving live pythons
Authorities in Tennessee are investigating an unusual robbery at a petrol station where a group of thieves used live pythons as a distraction to steal merchandise. The incident, captured on CCTV, has baffled law enforcement and store employees.
How the heist unfolded
According to security footage, four individuals—including a woman—entered the gas station and immediately executed their unusual plan. While the woman engaged the cashier in conversation, one of the men placed a ball python on the counter.
As the startled cashier reached for his phone, seemingly to document the bizarre moment, the woman attempted to grab it. Moments later, another man dangled a second python over the counter, escalating the confusion.
The footage cuts off at that point, but investigators believe the distraction allowed the suspects to steal merchandise.
What was stolen?
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the suspects made off with approximately $400 worth of CBD oil.
Mayur Raval, an employee who was working at the store during the incident, described the chaos that unfolded.
“They were just waving them around and putting them on the counter,” Raval told WREG-TV News. “One person brought in one snake first, and then after that, he brought in another snake. One is white, and one is brown or a mix.”
Raval recounted how the thieves managed to snatch the CBD oil while distracting the staff. He believes they may have intended to steal more but were deterred by the presence of other customers.
A well-planned distraction?
The suspects reportedly pulled their vehicle right up to the front door of the store, suggesting a level of premeditation.
“I think they planned to successfully come here and rob the store,” Raval speculated. “The snake is a weapon, you know.”
Investigation ongoing
Authorities are still working to identify the suspects and determine whether similar incidents have occurred in the area.
The bizarre nature of the crime has drawn widespread attention, with many questioning whether live animals will become an emerging trend in criminal distractions.
Police urge anyone with information on the suspects to come forward as the investigation continues.
