Fatal Fireworks Mishap
A South Carolina father, dressed in a patriotic outfit, tragically lost his life on the 4th of July after a firework exploded on his head. Allen Ray McGrew, 41, was attempting to entertain his neighbors during a block party in Summerville when the incident occurred.
Attempt to show off turns deadly
McGrew, who was putting on a fireworks display, decided to “show off” by placing a lit firework on his head around 10:30 p.m., according to reports from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses said McGrew suffered fatal head injuries from the explosion and died instantly at the scene.
Paige McGrew, Allen’s wife, told the Post and Courier, “He was holding this firework over his top hat. I thought he was just showboating before he set it on the ground. I didn’t realize he had already lit it.”
The incident occurred after McGrew had been drinking for several hours, as detailed in a police report. Known for his love of Independence Day, McGrew had donned a new Uncle Sam costume for the event. “Allen loved this holiday,” his wife said. “He was a patriot; he was proud of his son and he was excited to have a new daughter-in-law. He was living his best life last night.”
Allen McGrew, an HVAC worker, was remembered by his wife as a “genuine, good person” who “loved life.” “He worked hard, and he played hard,” she added. McGrew leaves behind a son who was recently engaged, adding to the family’s sorrow on what was meant to be a joyous day.
