Watch: Los Angeles car nearly hits 100 cyclists, sparks concerns of New Orleans-style attack

In a concerning development that has drawn parallels to last week’s tragic New Orleans attack, LA authorities are investigating a tense confrontation between a motorist and approximately 100 cyclists that occurred Monday on West Olympic Boulevard. The incident, which began as a near-collision, eventually escalated into an alleged assault in a parking garage.

The incident

Eyewitness footage circulating on social media captures a white sedan maneuvering through a large group of cyclists, with the vehicle visibly weaving between several bicycles before the crowd disperses. The situation, however, did not end there.

According to social media reports, the incident took a more serious turn when the cyclists allegedly pursued the vehicle to a nearby parking facility. One witness described the scene on social media: “Around 100 teen cyclists were involved in an incident on West Olympic Blvd, LA. After a near collision, they followed the driver to a parking garage, where the situation escalated and the driver was assaulted.”

Disputed narratives

The incident has sparked debate online about responsibility and road safety. Some social media users have defended the driver, with one observer noting: “The teens had unlawfully taken over the roadway when a man driving a Mercedes attempted to navigate through the group.”

Another account provided additional detail: “After passing through, the driver tried to leave the area but was pursued and cornered in a parking garage. There, the teenagers attacked him and vandalized his car by smashing its windows.”

New Orleans comparisons

The incident has drawn immediate comparisons to last week’s tragic events in New Orleans, where Shamsud-Din Jabbar deliberately drove a pickup truck into New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people before dying in a police shootout. That attack gained additional notoriety when investigators discovered an ISIS flag displayed on the perpetrator’s vehicle.

Ongoing investigation

The Los Angeles Police Department has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Important details, including the identities of both the driver and the cyclists involved, remain unknown. Crucially, investigators have not yet determined the driver’s intentions during the initial encounter.

The incident highlights growing concerns about road safety and the potential for vehicular violence in American cities, particularly in the wake of the New Orleans attack. As this story develops, authorities will need to balance these security concerns with the rights and safety of both motorists and cyclists sharing urban streets.

This is a developing story. The investigation is ongoing, and neither the cyclists nor the driver have been identified at the time of publication.
