The former Secretary of State couldn’t contain her amusement
During Donald Trump’s inaugural address on Monday, an unexpected moment stole the spotlight. As the newly sworn-in president announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” cameras captured Hillary Clinton stifling a laugh, a reaction that quickly went viral online.
The former Secretary of State and First Lady, seated alongside her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was visibly amused. While Clinton lowered her head in laughter, Bill Clinton turned to her with a knowing smile.
Trump’s bold proclamation
Speaking from the Capitol Rotunda after taking the oath of office, Trump declared, “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring the awe, admiration of the entire world.”
He continued, “A short time from now, we will be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and we will be restoring the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.”
Mixed reactions among attendees
While Hillary Clinton’s reaction captured attention, others in attendance maintained a more reserved demeanor. Former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and her husband, Doug Emhoff, showed no visible response to Trump’s announcement.
The moment of amusement has since been widely shared on social media. A video clip featuring the former first lady’s reaction has drawn millions of views, with many users commenting on the lighter side of an otherwise serious occasion.
This isn’t the first time Trump has floated the idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Earlier this month, at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump hinted at the proposal, saying, “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name.”
He added, “And it’s appropriate. Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, an outspoken Trump supporter, has already pledged to introduce legislation backing the renaming initiative.
Online and international reactions
The proposal has sparked discussions online and internationally. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador mocked the suggestion, quipping that it might be better to call it “Mexican America.”
Trump’s statements and Clinton’s reaction have added an unexpected layer of levity to the political discourse, providing a viral moment amidst the rollout of the new administration’s policies.
