Columbia University has faced criticism for antisemitism amid recent pro-Palestinian protests, which began as on-campus demonstrations nearly three weeks ago and have since spread nationwide.
A video circulating online shows a student tearing their diploma at the graduation ceremony on the university’s New York City campus, leading to strong backlash from internet users.
The viral video depicts the student ripping their diploma after receiving it from the Vice Chancellor, who appeared surprised but did not intervene. The ceremony reportedly took place at the university’s School of Social Work, with the student receiving a Master’s of Social Work in Integrated Practice and Programming. The video sparked heated debate online, with many condemning the act as a “publicity stunt.”
One social media user commented, “That was certainly an expensive hissy fit! Now, would YOU hire such a person? Because I certainly wouldn’t, not for a serious business. I pity anyone who gets her for their barista! I’m sure she’ll do well at some NGO. That’s about the only place she might fit.”
Another remarked, “No worries. It doesn’t negate the degree. Purely performative.” A third user expressed disappointment, stating, “What’s there to be proud of in this action? It’s really thoughtless. Even the university diploma presenter doesn’t seem to really care about it.”
Netizens linked the student’s actions to politics, with one user suggesting a connection to the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness plans, stating, “These are the people Joe Biden‘s administration wants the country to forgive their loans.” Another remarked, “And Biden wants us to repay her loans. Awesome.”
