In a shocking and disturbing incident, an illegal immigrant in New York was caught on camera carrying the dead body of a woman on his back near a police vehicle. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Jhon Moises Chacaguasay-Ilbis, is accused of murdering 21-year-old Joselyn Jhoana Toaquiza on her birthday.
The Fatal meeting
According to media reports, Chacaguasay-Ilbis and Toaquiza, both of whom illegally crossed the US border in 2023, arranged a meeting at an Airbnb on June 18. It was there that Chacaguasay-Ilbis allegedly suffocated Toaquiza and later buried her body in an upstate New York park. A video circulating on social media shows Chacaguasay-Ilbis carrying the victim’s body on his back, passing a police cruiser at the exact moment.
Background and immigration status
Both Chacaguasay-Ilbis and Toaquiza were originally from Ecuador and had been schoolmates. Chacaguasay-Ilbis entered the US illegally through the El Paso border in Texas in January 2023 and was subsequently released due to overcrowding. Toaquiza crossed into the US in June of the same year. She was detained by Border Patrol but released after claiming her life was in danger in Ecuador due to an ex-romantic partner, though it remains unclear if she was referring to Chacaguasay-Ilbis.
Legal proceedings
Following the murder, Chacaguasay-Ilbis surrendered to the police and has been charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse. During his appearance in Syracuse City Court, he claimed he was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident and could not recall the events.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the community, highlighting issues related to illegal immigration and law enforcement response. Authorities continue to investigate the case, seeking to understand the full circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Joselyn Jhoana Toaquiza.
