Canyon Lake’s dwindling water levels have revealed some remarkable geological characteristics. Boaters on the reservoir discovered some caves that had previously been hidden from view near the lake. The discovery of the underground cave comes at a time when water levels in the popular lake have been dropping for months as a result of the state’s severe drought.
The Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River in Texas’ Comal County
Canyon Lake is a reservoir on the Guadalupe River in Texas’ Comal County. It was constructed to aid in flood control and water conservation. The dam’s construction began in 1958 and was completed in 1964.
By 1968, the lake had reached the conservation pool level and had reached its lowest point in recorded history in late August.
According to Water Data for Texas, Canyon Lake was 65.7 percent filled as of Tuesday, a 20% decrease from this time last year.
Another prominent Texas lake is facing similar problems
Pamela Hough Gilbert of Canyon Lake was out enjoying the reservoir with her husband last weekend when she noticed an open cave in an area of the lake known as “party cove.”
“I’ve heard rumors about underwater caves in Canyon Lake for 40 years or more. It was just so cool to finally see one materialize,” Gilbert told KSAT on Tuesday. “Canyon Lake has lots of secrets.”
Despite being an interesting discovery, Gilbert said she avoided going into the cave since it gave her a terrible feeling.
Divers have previously discovered entire communities at the bottom of Canyon Lake, so caves aren’t the only thing hidden beneath the lake’s surface. The US Army Corps of Engineers manages the reservoir. Manmade lakes are frequently built over existing constructions or geological features, such as towns, caverns, or forests.
However, as water levels fall, uncovered objects can endanger sailors. Another prominent Texas lake, about 100 miles northeast of Canyon Lake, is facing similar problems. Boaters and swimmers have been advised to use extreme caution when on the lake, according to officials.
