Texas Unveils 90-Foot Hanuman Statue, a New Landmark in American Spirituality
Introduction: A New Cultural Milestone
A 90-foot-tall bronze statue of Lord Hanuman has been unveiled near Houston, marking a significant addition to the cultural and spiritual landscape of the United States. Named the “Statue of Union,” this towering figure is now a prominent landmark in Texas, visible from miles away, and is recognized as the third tallest sculpture in the U.S.
The Statue of Union: A record-breaking achievement
The “Statue of Union” stands as one of the tallest statues in the world and holds several distinctions: it is the tallest Hanuman murti outside India, the tallest statue in Texas, and ranks third in height among U.S. statues, surpassed only by the Statue of Liberty in New York (151 feet) and the Pegasus and Dragon in Hallandale Beach, Florida (110 feet). According to the organizers, this statue symbolizes “selflessness, devotion, and unity.”
Unveiling at Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple: A grand ceremony
The statue was unveiled at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, a few miles from Houston, during a grand Prana Prathishta Mahotsavam ceremony held from August 15 to 18. The event symbolized “selflessness, devotion, and unity,” honoring Hanuman’s role in reuniting Lord Ram and Sita.
This monumental project was envisioned by His Holiness Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, a Padma Bhushan awardee and renowned Vedic scholar. Swamiji’s vision was to create a spiritual epicenter for North America, and the “Statue of Union” stands as a testament to this goal.
Ceremonial highlights: A display of devotion
The festivities, which began on August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day, culminated on August 18 with the Prana Prathishta ceremony. Led by Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji and a team of Vedic priests and scholars, the rituals were a profound expression of devotion and spirituality. Highlights of the ceremony included a helicopter showering flowers upon the murti, the sprinkling of sacred water, and the placing of a 72-foot-long garland around Hanuman’s neck, as thousands of devotees chanted the names of Shri Ram and Hanuman in unison.
The statue not only embodies Hanuman’s indomitable spirit but also represents a new milestone in the cultural and spiritual landscape of America. It stands as a symbol of devotion, strength, and unity for all who come to witness its grandeur, the organizers said.
