Texas woman sentenced to 50 years for forcing children to live with sibling's decomposing body for over a year

In an unimaginably disturbing case of child abuse and neglect, a Texas woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after forcing her children to live in an apartment with the rotting body of their deceased 8-year-old brother for more than a year.

Horrific circumstances

According to court documents, 38-year-old Gloria Williams kept the body of her son, Kendrick Lee, in the family’s soiled, roach-infested apartment for months after he was beaten to death by her boyfriend, Brian Coulter.

Williams’ three other children, aged 7, 10, and 15 at the time, were left to fend for themselves as the body slowly decomposed.

When police finally discovered the gruesome scene in October 2021, they reported it was “the most disturbing” case they had ever worked on, describing it as “too horrific to be real.” The three surviving children were found thin, malnourished, and hungry, having been abandoned for an extended period.

Legal proceedings

In October 2022, Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of injury to a child. During the nearly two-day sentencing hearing, her defense attorneys attempted to shift blame to her boyfriend Coulter, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole for Kendrick’s murder. However, the judge ultimately sentenced Williams to 50 years behind bars.

Following her arrest, Williams relinquished her parental rights. The two younger siblings have since been adopted, while the eldest is currently in a foster care placement.

Community response

The disturbing nature of this case has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing outrage and disbelief at the level of abuse and neglect the children endured.

“As a parent, I cannot fathom how anyone could subject their own children to such unspeakable trauma,” said local resident Sarah Watkins. “These poor kids have been through an unimaginable hell, and my heart breaks for them.”

Call for reform

The case has reignited discussions about potential shortcomings in child welfare systems and the need for stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable youth. Advocates are calling for increased resources and training to identify and intervene in cases of severe neglect and abuse.

This story is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and community support in preventing such horrific tragedies from occurring. If you suspect child abuse or neglect, please contact the appropriate authorities immediately.
