Texas woman awarded $1.2bn in revenge porn case

A jury awarded a Texas woman $1.2 billion after her ex-boyfriend posted intimate photographs of her body on porn websites. According to the BBC, the woman, identified only by her initials DL in court documents, launched a harassment claim against her former partner in 2022. In April 2022, the woman filed a civil case in Harris County Civil Court, stating that her ex-boyfriend Marques Jamal Jackson had disseminated her nude photos on bogus Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube accounts.

According to the petition, the woman began dating the accused in 2016. The two officially split up in October 2021. The couple shared an apartment in Chicago. During their relationship, the woman shared intimate images of herself with the defendant. After their breakup, the accused posted the pictures on social media platforms and adult websites without her consent.

The accused allegedly texted the woman, “You will spend the rest of your life attempting and failing to delete yourself from the internet”

According to the BBC, the accused also shared links to the images with her friends and family via a Dropbox folder. Jackson was accused of having access to her mother’s phone, social media accounts, email, and camera system. The accused allegedly texted the woman, “You will spend the rest of your life attempting and failing to delete yourself from the internet.” Everyone you encounter will hear the story and start looking for you. “Good luck with your hunt.”

According to the news outlet, Jackson shared the photos “to inflict a combination of psychological abuse, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.” The accused did not appear in court, despite the fact that he was represented by an attorney. The jury awarded the woman $200 million in damages for past and future mental suffering, as well as $1 billion in exemplary damages. According to ABC News, the victim turned to a civil attorney after obtaining little aid from local authorities.
