Houston, Texas—Marisa Christie, 30, experienced one of life’s most joyous moments—the birth of her triplets—followed by an unimaginable ordeal. After delivering her babies via a planned cesarean section in August, a rare and severe complication left her unconscious and robbed her of any memory of the birth.
A routine delivery turns life-threatening
During the delivery, Christie suffered an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare but dangerous condition that occurs when amniotic fluid or fetal material enters the bloodstream, triggering a catastrophic reaction.
“The doctors had pulled triplets [babies] out. Actually, they were resting them on my stomach to do a delayed cord clamping,” Christie shared in an interview with Today. “My arms flew up, and that was when my heart stopped.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, AFE is extremely rare but often fatal. Christie’s heart stopped for 45 minutes, and medical teams worked tirelessly to save her life.
Miracles amidst trauma
The ordeal didn’t end there. Christie also suffered a seizure during the birth. Quick-thinking medical staff, led by the anesthesiologist, performed CPR and successfully resuscitated her. Doctors later removed her uterus to save her life.
After a week of being unconscious, Christie woke to learn of her new reality.
“My husband was like, ‘Hey, so we had the babies. They’re healthy and great,’ Christie recalled. ‘I was absolutely terrified … How could I not remember having my babies?’
Adjusting to a new life
The traumatic experience left Christie physically and emotionally altered. Nine weeks after her ordeal, she was able to go home to her family, but the road to recovery has been challenging.
“I feel very disconnected to whoever [I] was before,” she shared. “I’ve gotten stronger, but I’ve also changed so much because going through a traumatic experience like that changes the way you view things.”
Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for the series of “miracles” that saved her life.
Community rallies for support
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the Christie family, raising over $22,000 so far. The funds aim to cover medical expenses and daily needs as the family navigates this difficult chapter.
“Any contribution, big or small, will go directly towards helping them navigate this challenging period, covering medical bills, daily expenses, and providing some relief during this uncertain time. Thank you for your generosity and prayers,” the campaign reads.
A story of resilience and hope
Marisa Christie’s story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the strength required to overcome its most difficult moments. Her journey, though marked by trauma, also highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of community support.
