A former “Teacher of the Year” from Starr Elementary School in South Carolina, Dylan Robert Dukes, has been charged with stalking an 11-year-old student. According to police, Dukes sent over 60 love letters, and gave cards, gifts, and “unwanted hugs” to the young girl, making her uncomfortable.
Disturbing behavior and arrest
Authorities revealed that Dukes provided the girl with a personalized box containing a letter for each day of the summer break. Upon discovering that she would no longer attend his school, Dukes began attending her church. Detectives, alerted to his behavior, searched Dukes’ classroom and found numerous non-sexual photos of the child on his desk.
Dukes was charged with stalking and detained at the Anderson County Detention Center. The sheriff’s office stated, “We are fortunate that this is the one and only charge. Detectives were able to stop the harassment and stalking before it became anything physical – which the juvenile was in fear of.”
Court hearing and family’s concerns
During a virtual court appearance, Dukes wore a Starr Elementary School t-shirt. The victim’s parents expressed fear for their daughter’s safety and concern over Dukes’ access to their family. The girl’s mother recounted, “My child has been handed love notes by an adult male countless times. He attended my child’s functions outside of school. He started attending our church. I now realize that this access to my child had continued to grow his obsession.”
Dukes’ attorney highlighted his 2023 Teacher of the Year accolade and argued for his release on bond, claiming he posed no flight risk. However, the girl’s father opposed his release, citing fears for the family’s safety due to Dukes’ obsession.
The judge set a $50,000 surety bond and prohibited Dukes from contacting the victim or her family if released. As of Thursday night, Dukes remained in custody.
