The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) is investigating one of its agents following an incident involving a staff member in Vice President Kamala Harris’ office, according to a statement released by Harris’ team on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed that the agent in question has been placed on administrative leave while the agency conducts an investigation into what it described as a “misconduct allegation involving an employee.” No further details were provided regarding the nature of the misconduct.
“Zero Tolerance” for misconduct
Harris’ office emphasized its firm stance on inappropriate behaviour. “The Vice President’s office has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” the statement read. Senior officials were notified by the Secret Service about the incident and were informed that an investigation had been initiated by the USSS. The statement did not identify the Secret Service agent involved nor the staff member from Harris’ office. Additionally, Harris’ office indicated that no further information would be provided at this time.
Alleged incident in Wisconsin
According to a report from Real Clear Politics, the Secret Service agent allegedly forced himself on a Harris staffer in a hotel room in Wisconsin earlier this week. The incident reportedly occurred as part of an advance team scouting potential campaign stops for Harris. Vice President Harris is facing a Republican challenger, former President Donald Trump, in what is shaping up to be a close race leading up to the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential elections. This incident involving the Secret Service adds another layer of complexity as Harris’ team navigates a highly competitive election season.
Secret Service under scrutiny
The Secret Service, responsible for protecting U.S. political figures and their families, has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks. The agency faced criticism after former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt on July 13 during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Following the incident, the Secret Service’s former director resigned, and an internal investigation revealed lapses in security measures leading up to the attempted shooting. The outcome of this latest investigation could further impact public confidence in the agency as it handles the safety of the nation’s political leaders amidst an already charged political environment.
