San Diego Zoo: Winston, 52-year-old gorilla, dies 20 years beyond typical life expectancy

Winston, the Remarkable Gorilla, Dies at 52

Winston, one of the world’s oldest male gorillas, died at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park at 52, far surpassing the typical life expectancy of 30–40 years for gorillas in the wild.

A life beyond expectations

Winston, a western lowland gorilla, lived roughly 20 years beyond his expected lifespan. The park announced his passing on July 13, noting he had been receiving extensive medical treatments for several age-related conditions, including heart disease, degenerative joint disease, and kidney disease. Ultimately, Winston was euthanized after careful consideration of his worsening health.

Described as “the best of us” by care specialists, Winston was known for his patient, kind, and compassionate nature as a troop leader. Born in the wild and later taken in by a private owner in England, he arrived at the San Diego Zoo in 1984 and quickly became a beloved member of the zoo community.

One of the first great apes to be treated for COVID-19

Winston made headlines in 2021 as one of the first great apes to be treated for COVID-19, during which veterinarians also discovered his heart disease. His resilience and the advanced care he received highlighted the ongoing efforts to provide exceptional health care to zoo animals.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance expressed deep sorrow over Winston’s passing, encouraging the public to share their condolences and support for the dedicated wildlife care and health team, staff, volunteers, members, and guests who are mourning this loss.

The legacy of a gentle giant

Western lowland gorillas, typically weighing up to 440 pounds and standing up to 5-and-a-half feet tall, are critically endangered, with most of their population residing in remote rainforests of the Republic of Congo. Winston’s remarkable life serves as a testament to the care and dedication of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

In April, the world’s oldest gorilla, Fatou, celebrated her 67th birthday in Germany, underscoring the potential for gorillas to live long and fulfilling lives under human care. Winston’s legacy will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
