Several news agencies have reported on the construction of doomsday bunkers in META CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Kauai residential compound in Hawaii. According to Metro, the underground vault was up to 5000 square feet in size. It was also projected that the bunker facility would cost roughly $270 million to develop.
Following this piece of news, a notion spread via social media platforms, particularly X (previously Twitter), that many other millionaires were also secretly building bunkers.
One of the first to make such a claim was an X user with the handle @sirgoofy28, who captioned his post, “Wait, 15 billionaires have built bunkers this week???”
So far, the post has received 11.9 million views and has sparked internet apocalyptic speculation. However, the rumor has yet to be validated by a reliable source and has been discredited by community remarks and reader context.
However, this did not stop people on the internet from forecasting cataclysmic events in the near future. An X user responded on @dom_lucre’s tweet in this regard.
“If they didn’t know something, they wouldn’t build it,” say netizens in response to millionaires claiming to be building doomsday bunkers
According to Metro, Mark Zuckerberg is not the only billionaire working on a doomsday shelter. PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel is also said to be attempting to obtain permission to build his own bunker-style residence in New Zealand’s South Island. He will share it with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, as reported by Komando.
Similarly, given the absence of enough living space on Mars, Tesla, SpaceX, and X CEO Elon Musk is rumored to be planning his own version of a doomsday bunker.
Not only that, but five of the world’s wealthiest people met with famed novelist, theorist, and City University of New York professor Douglas Rushkoff and anonymously voiced their wish to establish an underground safe haven in the event of an apocalypse.
Meanwhile, in a post, X user @dom_lucre claimed that President Joe Biden and his wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, were also building a doomsday bunker on their Delaware property. As proof, he shared a screenshot of the construction permission.
However, the claim that 15 billionaires only lately began building bunkers is untrue. But that didn’t stop individuals on the internet from speculating that the end was close, whether it was due to biological warfare, climate change, nuclear war, alien invasion, or simply a few more pandemics. Some even prophesied the outbreak of World War III.
It is worth noting that a few companies are offering to build doomsday shelters for anyone with billions of dollars in their bank account. These include Vivos, whose ad motto is “away from riots, violence, targets, and submersion zones,” and Oppidum, which is developing bunkers starting at $40 million, according to X user @dom_lucre.
Rising S Bunkers, Kengo Kuma & Associates, and Survival Condo are all on the list. According to Metro, these doomsday bunkers boast opulent interiors, pools, bowling alleys, sophisticated kitchens, and living rooms, among other amenities.
None of the millionaires whose names have surfaced, including Mark Zuckerberg, have offered statements.
