Philadelphia couple defies odds, sets Guinness world record in heartwarming wedding
In a world often dominated by headlines of conflict and despair, a remarkable love story has emerged from a senior living facility in Philadelphia, capturing hearts and breaking records.
The couple, Bernie Littman, 100, and Marjorie Fiterman, 102, have officially been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest newlyweds, with a combined age of 202 years and 271 days.
A love story nine years in the making
Their extraordinary journey began nine years ago at a costume party within their senior living community. Despite the couple having attended the University of Pennsylvania during their youth, their paths had never crossed until fate intervened in their twilight years.
Bernie, a retired engineer, and Marjorie, a former teacher, had each been married to their first spouses for over six decades before becoming widowed. Their connection blossomed through shared meals, community events, and a deep mutual understanding.
A wedding filled with joy and generations
On May 19, the couple exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony at their senior living facility, surrounded by four generations of Bernie’s family. Under a traditional Jewish chuppah, they were wheeled to their ceremony, radiating happiness and defying conventional expectations of love and companionship.
“With so much sadness (and) fear in the world, it’s nice to be able to share something that brings people joy,” said Sarah Sicherman, Bernie’s granddaughter, in a heartwarming social media post announcing the wedding.
Rabbi Adam Wohlberg, who officiated the ceremony, shared a touching perspective: “Most of the couples I marry these days met on some kind of dating app. I much prefer the old ways. You live in the same building; you bump into each other, and you fall in love.”
Secrets to longevity and love
When asked about their secrets to a long life, the couple offers unique insights. Bernie credits his passion for reading and staying informed, while Marjorie playfully attributes her longevity to buttermilk.
Their union is more than just a world record; it’s a powerful testament to the enduring nature of love, proving that romance and connection have no expiration date.
As Bernie and Marjorie begin this new chapter together, they remind us that life’s most beautiful moments can arrive unexpectedly, at any age.
