Wild Thang, an eight-year-old Pekingese from Coos Bay, Oregon, was crowned the winner of the 2024 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest on Friday, June 21. After years of competing, Wild Thang beat seven other contestants at the annual event held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.
A long-awaited victory
Wild Thang’s journey to victory was marked by perseverance. Having competed four times before, he had previously secured second place three times. This year, he finally claimed the top spot, earning widespread applause and admiration. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Wild Thang recently retired to Oregon and continued his quest for the title.
Celebrating unique canine beauty
The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, a nearly 50-year tradition, celebrates dogs of all breeds and sizes. According to the contest’s website, the event is not about mocking the dogs but highlighting their unique charm and beauty. “The annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is not about making fun of ‘ugly’ dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful,” the website states.
Prizes and participants
Wild Thang and his owner, Ann Lewis, were awarded $5,000 for their win. Second place went to Rome, a 14-year-old pug, who received $3,000. Daisy May, a 14-year-old mixed-breed rescue dog, secured third place and a prize of $2,000. Both Rome and Daisy May were first-time competitors.
Wild Thang’s distinctive appearance is due to a condition that prevented his teeth from growing, leaving his tongue perpetually hanging out. Additionally, he suffers from a muscular disorder in one of his legs. According to his owner, Wild Thang contracted distemper as a puppy from a rescue foster and “barely” survived. Despite these challenges, Lewis describes Wild Thang as a “healthy, happy Glugly (glamorous/ugly) guy.”
Promoting pet vaccination
Wild Thang’s owner highlights his love for people, other dogs, and his toys. She also emphasizes his mission to promote pet vaccination. “His purpose in life is to promote the necessity of getting your pets vaccinated,” she said.
Wild Thang’s victory at the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest serves as a reminder of the unique beauty and resilience of all pets, regardless of their appearance.
