Ohio man wins $50,000 lottery with late dog's license number

In a heartwarming turn of events, Roger Sours, a resident of Tiffin, Ohio, won $50,000 in the Pick 5 lottery by using the license tag numbers of his cherished dog. The win sent a jolt through Sours as he sat on his couch in shock, watching the lottery results unfold on television.

Roger Sours informed Ohio Lottery authorities that he purchased his winning ticket at the Pit Stop on N. Washington Street for Wednesday’s Pick 5 drawing. He chose the unique sequence of numbers 1-0-8-2-2, a combination that held sentimental value.

“I play two sets of numbers for Pick 5, and this number, the number that hit, was actually my license number for my German shepherd that I played. She’s no longer with us anymore,” he said reflecting on his cherished pet.

When Sours saw the lottery results on TV, he was astonished. “I just sat here. I watch the lottery when I can, when it’s on TV, and I just sat here. It was like, I froze. I just couldn’t believe that it hit,” he recalled.

Financial plans and future aspirations

Sours plans to use his winnings to pay off some debt and increase his savings. This remarkable win is part of a series of fortunate events for Ohio lottery players. On July 4, another Ohioan celebrated financial independence after winning the Powerball.

According to the Powerball website, a ticket sold in the Buckeye State won the $139.3 million jackpot in Wednesday’s drawing when it matched all six balls. Additionally, the $66.5 million cash option is available to the winner.

The Ohio Lottery announced on Friday that the winning ticket for the Powerball jackpot was purchased at the Huber Heights Walmart Supercenter.

Powerball wins continue

The Powerball jackpot has been claimed five times in 2024, with the latest winner being a New Jersey lottery player who won $222.6 million on June 10. As a result, the Powerball jackpot will reset to $20 million for Saturday night’s drawing. Each Powerball ticket costs $2, but for an extra $1, you can add the Power Play, which can multiply your potential winnings by up to five times (excluding the jackpot and Match 5). If the prize is below $150 million, there’s also a 10x Power Play option available.

To play, each participant chooses five numbers between 1 and 69 for the white balls and one number between 1 and 26 for the red Powerball. Alternatively, players can opt for a quick pick ticket, allowing the lottery machine to generate random numbers.

Prizes range from $4 for matching the Powerball to $1 million (except in California) for matching all five white balls, with the jackpot awarded for matching all six balls. You can see the full list of prize payouts on the Powerball website.
