Introduction of the NYC Trash Bin
On Monday, New York City’s Department of Sanitation revealed its first-ever official trash pickup bin, marking a significant step in the city’s waste management strategy.
The city touts this bin as the most affordable of its quality. Starting Nov. 12, all buildings with one to nine units must have a compliant trash bin, whether they choose the official one or purchase another suitable option.
Mayor Adams’ Statement
“Today, we are tossing even more black bags into the dustbin of history and taking the next step forward in our ‘Trash Revolution,’” said Mayor Eric Adams. “The first-ever, official NYC Bin is high-quality, affordable, and will build on our efforts containerizing more than 70 percent of the city’s trash to protect our most valuable and limited resource — our public space.”
Rat prevention measures
The new regulations aim to combat the city’s rat problem. The official NYC bin is priced around $50, and residents are encouraged to place their orders by Oct. 1 to ensure they have their bins in time.
