A career pickpocket, included in the NYPD’s list of top subway crime recidivists, is back on the streets following another alleged crime, authorities reported. Darin Mickens, with over 60 arrests, allegedly targeted a woman on Grand Street in March, stealing her wallet as she walked with her daughter.
Mickens, 56, was identified through surveillance footage and arrested on May 13. Despite his extensive criminal record, Mickens, who is featured in the NYPD’s “Nifty 50” deck of cards highlighting the city’s top subway-crime recidivists, was quickly released. He pleaded not guilty to three counts of grand larceny on June 25 and was granted supervised release by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. The DA’s office noted the charges were not bail-eligible.
Criticism of current laws
Critics argue that the cycle of arrest and release will continue unless the laws change. “This guy’s added 60 numbers to your list [of crimes in the city] and he’s out there doing it again,” said Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “Some people will say he’s not dangerous. These crimes can turn into violent crimes in a second.”
Authorities emphasize the need for stronger measures to prevent repeat offenders like Mickens from continuing their criminal activities.
