Outrage on the Wildwood Boardwalk

A shocking incident unfolded on July 6 at Surfside Pier, part of Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks in Wildwood, New Jersey, when Franklin Zeigler, 29, of Cape May, decapitated a seagull that tried to steal French fries from his daughter. The violent reaction led to his arrest on multiple charges, including animal cruelty.

The incident

Witnesses reported that Zeigler became enraged when a seagull swooped down to snatch fries from his daughter’s plate. In a fit of fury, Zeigler grabbed the bird and tore its head off. According to New Jersey 101.5, he then asked boardwalk employees for a trash bag to dispose of the bird’s remains, which he was still holding.

The North Wildwood police responded to the scene and found Zeigler uncooperative and aggressive during an unrelated investigation. Authorities arrested him and charged him with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was also charged with third-degree animal cruelty.

Legal proceedings

Zeigler was released with a court date set for August 9. The Newark Star-Ledger reported that the charges include serious offenses that could lead to significant penalties if he is convicted.

Community reaction

The incident has sparked outrage among the public and animal rights advocates. The North Wildwood Police Department has requested that anyone with additional information about the case contact their Detective Division at 609-522-2411. This disturbing act has raised concerns about animal cruelty and public safety on the busy boardwalk.

Zeigler’s actions have brought attention to the issue of wildlife interactions in public spaces and the importance of handling such situations without resorting to violence.
