Missouri lawmakers ban gender-affirming care,  limit transgender student-athletes

The US state of Missouri is the most recent to ratify a prohibition on transgender healthcare that is gender-affirming. The GOP lawmakers also adopted a bill that will prohibit transgender women and girls from participating in female sports teams. The gender-affirming care restriction is anticipated to go into force on August 28. Under this policy, trans kids won’t have access to hormones, gender-affirming surgery, or puberty blockers. Some individuals may be affected by the limits, including prisoners and inmates, who won’t be able to access any gender-affirming medical care because Medicaid health insurance won’t cover the surgery.

The policy would cover both public and private institutions from kindergarten through college and would prohibit transgender girls and women from participating in sports. Any educational institution that disobeys the directive will no longer get governmental financing. Governor Mike Parson has received both bills and is anticipated to sign them soon. The Republican leader was the one who compelled the GOP legislators to pass the bill or extend the session’s duration.

“When you have kids being surgically and or chemically altered for life for no good reason, yes, it’s time for the government to get involved,” said Republican Rep. Brad Hudson as the bill was approved on the House floor. The decision by the Missouri House comes a day after North Dakota Senate lawmakers passed a bill to ignore the pronouns the transgender students use.

The adopted bill prohibits public schools and governmental organizations from compelling teachers and staff to use transgender people’s pronouns. Additionally, it forbids transgender people from using the lavatory of their choice without a parent’s or guardian’s permission. If a student self-identifies as transgender, teachers must inform their parents or guardians. Overall, at least 16 states in the US have passed legislation restricting or outlawing gender-affirming medical care for children, while transgender persons are not permitted to use the restrooms that correspond to their gender identification in at least eight states. A nationwide conservative campaign to limit the rights of transgender individuals includes the outlawing of gender-affirming medical care and limits on sports participation in certain US states.
