Michigan: Teen girl missing for two months found engaged to a 44-year-old man

Teen Vanishes in May, Found in Unusual Circumstances

A Michigan teenager, Penelope “Penny” Wise, 17, who had been missing for nearly two months, was discovered living with and engaged to a 44-year-old man she had just met. Wise disappeared from her Cedar Springs home on May 31 around 6 p.m., prompting a frantic search by her family and authorities.

Security footage last captured Wise walking alone near a bar in Rockford around midnight on June 1. According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, it was that same night she met her now-fiancé. Despite extensive efforts involving the FBI, US Marshals Service, Michigan State Police, and Rockland Department of Safety, Wise remained untraceable until her unexpected discovery.

Despite believing Wise had voluntarily left home, concerns for her well-being grew with each passing day. “We believe she intentionally walked away from home, but due to the length of time and no sightings, KCSO and her family are concerned for her well-being,” the sheriff’s office stated in a June 7 update.

Discovery by observant community member

The breakthrough came on Sunday morning when an observant community member recognized Wise from missing persons flyers. She was spotted riding a bike and was found to have been living with the unnamed man since the night she disappeared. Wise had first encountered him around 2 a.m. on June 1 and had stayed at his house since.

Teen found safe, investigation ongoing

Wise was found “safe,” and investigators are continuing to delve into the circumstances of her disappearance and engagement. Despite the unusual situation, the Kent County Prosecutor’s Office has not filed any charges against Wise’s fiancé.

Authorities are still piecing together the details of Wise’s two-month absence and the nature of her relationship with the older man.
