Man banned by United Airlines for urinating on sleeping co-passenger

Incident on UA Flight 189 leads to a lifetime ban

United Airlines has taken decisive action by banning a passenger who allegedly urinated on a sleeping co-passenger during a flight from San Francisco to Manila last month. The disturbing incident occurred on UA Flight 189 approximately four hours into the journey, leaving passengers and crew members in shock.

The alleged incident

According to reports, the unidentified man got up from his seat mid-flight and urinated on Jerome Gutierrez, a business-class passenger who was asleep and strapped into his seat. Gutierrez’s stepdaughter, Nicole Cornell, told the New York Post, “He was asleep and buckled in and was surprised when he looked at the man and thought he was dreaming.”

The situation became clear only after the man had finished urinating, leaving Gutierrez soaked from his stomach to his feet.

Flight attendants’ response under scrutiny

Cornell criticized the airline’s handling of the situation, stating that flight attendants advised her stepfather not to approach the perpetrator to avoid a potential confrontation. “They put the needs of the airline before my stepdad’s health. I am so disgusted and in shock with how United Airlines handled this! That is a biohazard, and the plane should’ve turned around to address this issue,” she said.

United Airlines issues statement

United Airlines has since confirmed the incident, stating that police were notified to meet the flight upon its arrival in Manila. “On December 28, we asked police to meet our flight when it arrived in Manila to address a passenger disturbance. We have banned this passenger,” the airline said in an official statement.

Previous incidents highlight growing concerns

This is not an isolated case of inappropriate behavior on flights. Similar incidents have been reported in the past, raising concerns about passenger safety and airline protocols.

In April last year, an Indian passenger aboard an American Airlines flight from New York to Delhi urinated on a co-passenger following an argument. The airline staff identified the individual as intoxicated at the time.

Another high-profile case occurred in November 2022, when a drunk man allegedly urinated on an elderly woman in the business class of an Air India flight. The incident reported months later led to the man’s arrest and a temporary flying ban of 30 days by the airline.

Safety and accountability in focus

With such incidents becoming alarmingly frequent, airlines are facing increasing scrutiny regarding their response protocols and measures to ensure the safety and dignity of passengers. United Airlines’ decision to ban the offender marks a step towards accountability, but questions remain about how such situations are managed in real time.

As passengers continue to demand better safeguards, airlines may need to revisit their policies to handle mid-air disturbances more effectively.
