Kevin, a Great Dane from Iowa recognized as the tallest male dog in the world, has died at the age of three, leaving his owners, Tracy and Roger Wolfe, heartbroken.
Guinness World Record holder
According to a statement released by Guinness World Records, which certified Kevin as the tallest dog in March, the towering canine passed away after falling ill and undergoing an unexpected surgery. Kevin measured an impressive 3 feet 2 inches (0.97 meters) from his feet to his withers, making him eight inches taller than the average male Great Dane and approximately the same height as many toddlers.
A beloved gentle giant
“He was just the best giant boy,” Kevin’s co-owners, Tracy and Roger Wolfe, expressed in their statement. “We are so glad that he was able to break the record and have that light on him. He absolutely adored the attention. I wish these giant breeds, and all dogs, could live longer than they do. It’s never enough time.”
Kevin’s record came after the previous titleholder, Zeus, another American Great Dane, passed away six months earlier. Zeus, also three years old at the time of his death, stood 3 feet 5.18 inches (1.046 meters) tall and succumbed to pneumonia after battling bone cancer, which led to the amputation of his right front limb.
Life with Kevin
In a recent interview with Guinness World Records, the Wolfes shared anecdotes about Kevin’s life in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he lived with the couple, their two young children, and a variety of other animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and horses. Despite his massive size, Kevin was known for being “terrified of” the household vacuum cleaner and maintained a trim figure despite consuming up to 10 cups of food daily.
“Kevin is just the epitome of a gentle giant. He was … just perfect for us,” Tracy Wolfe said, reflecting on the joy he brought to their family.
Kevin, named after the main character in the “Home Alone” movie series, will be remembered for his gentle nature and the record-breaking stature that brought him global fame.
