Quick-Thinking Saves Bird
In Amarillo, Texas, a family saved a baby bird they found on the ground by wrapping it in a warm tortilla until wildlife experts arrived. The family discovered the bird, initially believed to be a barn owl, while barbecuing. Concerned for its warmth, they heated a tortilla on the grill and wrapped it around the bird.
Innovative and effective method
When workers from the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center arrived, they found the bird snug in its tortilla wrap. The center praised the family’s ingenuity, stating, “Undoubtedly, it was an inventive method to keep the baby warm, and surprisingly, it was effective.” The bird, later identified as a Mississippi kite, is now recovering at the center and has been affectionately named “Taquito.”
Broader context
The center is currently caring for dozens of birds affected by Hurricane Beryl, including around 100 egrets and numerous doves from Houston. The family’s quick thinking and innovative method of keeping the bird warm underscore the importance of community efforts in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
