"I got shot Mama": Oregon teen's chilling text to mom as she's shot after celebrating 16th birthday

A birthday celebration turns tragic

What should have been a joyous milestone for Naomi Briggs became a nightmare. The 16-year-old, who had just celebrated her birthday, sent her mother, Drea Briggs, a chilling text early Thursday morning: “I got shot. Mama. Plz. Help me.”

Now, Naomi is in critical condition at an Oregon hospital, battling for her life after a gunshot wound that has already required multiple surgeries.

Drea, Naomi’s mother, recounted the horrifying moment she received her daughter’s message. “It’s like a nightmare,” she told KGW 8, visibly shaken. “She’s hooked up to machines, and her whole abdomen is still open. The doctor told me there’s a chance she might not make it, and it’s just been a struggle.”

Since the shooting, Naomi has undergone four surgeries to repair extensive internal damage, with another operation planned. Her recovery is expected to be long and grueling.

Police have arrested 18-year-old Sky Korbut in connection with the incident. He faces charges of third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Korbut reportedly purchased the firearm illegally for $650 on the streets of Portland’s Old Town Chinatown after failing a background check to buy a shotgun legally.

The shooting occurred while Korbut was driving Naomi home. Authorities allege that the gun went off accidentally during the ride.

Reflecting on the tragic turn of events, Drea issued a heartfelt plea to parents, saying, “She’s only 16 years old, and now her whole life has changed forever. This never should have happened. Know who your kids are hanging around. This is the tragedy of guns.”

Community support

In the wake of the shooting, the local community has rallied around the Briggs family. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover Naomi’s mounting medical expenses and rehabilitation.

Drea expressed her gratitude, saying, “The support we’ve received is overwhelming. It’s what’s keeping me strong for her. Hold onto your kids—you never know what’s going to happen.”

Looking ahead

While Naomi continues her fight for survival, her story serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence. For her family, friends, and supporters, every moment now is focused on her recovery and the hope for a brighter future.
