A homeless woman in Michigan was discovered living inside a store’s rooftop sign, with a computer, printer, and coffee maker, police reported.
According to the Associated Press, the woman, aged 34 and unnamed, was found by contractors investigating an extension cord on April 23 at a Midland store.
Officer Brennon Warren of Midland Police noted, “She was homeless. It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.”
Reportedly, the woman claimed to have a job but had been residing inside the sign for about a year.
The triangular sign, around 1.5 meters wide and 2.4 meters tall, has a door and is reachable from the roof, Warren described. Inside were essentials like a mini desk, clothing, a Keurig coffee maker, a printer, and a computer.
Though it’s unclear how she accessed the roof without a ladder, Warren speculated she may have climbed from behind the store or neighboring businesses.
SpartanNash, the store’s parent company, responded with compassion, emphasizing the widespread issue of safe, affordable housing.
