In a chilling development that has sent shockwaves through a small New Mexico community, authorities are investigating the discovery of multiple human skulls in Jal, New Mexico, with one potentially connected to a long-standing missing person case.
Initial discovery
The Lea County Sheriff’s Office said that a resident on Nov. 5 reported having an “unsettling encounter” while giving someone a ride.
The resident said that their passenger, who had two bags with him, “made alarming statements and discarded objects from the vehicle, some of which appeared to be human bones.”
Investigation unfolds
What followed was a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries. Initial searches of the area where objects were discarded yielded bone fragments, which were later confirmed to be human by a pathologist. The investigation led authorities to the passenger’s residence, where they made an even more shocking finding.
Scale of discovery
During the search of the subject’s home, investigators uncovered what they describe as “evidence of 10-20 human skulls,” dramatically expanding the scope of the investigation. The Lea County Sheriff’s Office is now faced with the complex task of determining the origin and identity of these remains.
Missing person connection
In a significant development, investigators have established a potential connection to a 2019 missing person case. Angela McManes, who disappeared that year, had her last known residence near where the skull fragments were discovered. “Authorities are working diligently to determine the connection between the remains and McManes, as well as other possible victims,” the sheriff’s office said.
Current status
The investigation has taken an unusual turn as the man at the center of the discovery claims to have purchased the bones online. As of now, according to KOAT, no charges have been filed against the individual.
Ongoing investigation
Law enforcement officials are conducting a thorough investigation to:
- Verify the origin of the human remains
- Identify potential victims
- Determine the authenticity of the online purchase claim
- Establish any connection to other missing persons cases
Public assistance requested
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to this case to come forward and contact law enforcement immediately. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
